US Label Review

US Label Review: Get Your Label Right Before It Reaches the Port

A label error does not show up until your goods are sitting at a US port. Then the options are a costly relabel, shipping it back, or destroying it. GOL reviews your food, supplement, cosmetic and pet food labels against FDA, FTC and California Prop 65 rules before you print, and tells you exactly what to change.

Why It Matters

Most Port Rejections Start on the Label

FDA does not approve labels in advance. The first time anyone official reads yours may be when your shipment arrives. A missing statement, a wrong format, or a claim you cannot back up can lead to:

Detention or refusal at the port

FDA can refuse entry to products that are misbranded. Refused goods must be exported or destroyed.

Relabeling before release

Goods are held until the label is corrected, while storage and demurrage keep adding up.

FTC enforcement over claims

Health, performance and "Made in USA" claims must be truthful and supported.

Prop 65 notices after launch

Missing California warnings are pursued by private enforcers, often through retailers and marketplaces.

What We Review

Three Rulebooks, One Report

Choose the regulations your product and sales channels need. Most brands selling nationally need all three.

FDA mandatory labeling

Everything that must appear on the label, and where: statement of identity, net quantity, ingredient list, Nutrition or Supplement Facts format, major food allergens, warnings, and the name and address of the manufacturer, packer or distributor.

FTC advertising claims

Whether your claims are truthful and supported: health and benefit claims, "natural" and "clean" wording, environmental claims, and origin claims such as "Made in USA".

California Proposition 65

Whether your formula or packaging contains chemicals on the Prop 65 list, and if a warning is required, that the warning wording and placement meet the safe harbor rules.

Products We Cover

Food, Supplements, Cosmetics and Pet Food

Pet food

FDA pet food labeling plus the AAFCO model label elements most states enforce, such as guaranteed analysis and feeding directions.

How It Works

From Artwork to a Compliant Label

A clear, guided path from your first enquiry to a print-ready label.

01Send your enquiry. Tell us the product type, number of SKUs and variants, the regulations you need, and where you sell. We reply with a quote.
02Share your label files. Artwork or a print proof, plus your ingredient list or formula and any marketing claims you plan to use.
03Get your label report. Each issue is listed with the rule behind it and the change needed, so your designer knows exactly what to fix.
04Revise and re-check. Send the updated artwork and we check it again. Re-checks are free until the label is complete.
05Print with confidence. Most labels are complete in about 3 rounds.

Real Cases

What Happens With and Without a Review

We do not publish client names. These four cases show the difference a review makes, including when the advice was not followed.

FTC + CBP · advice ignored

A "Made in USA" mark on an imported product

The product was made overseas but the packaging carried a "Made in USA" symbol. We flagged it and recommended a revision. The client shipped anyway.

Held at the US port and required to correct the label before it could be distributed.

FDA · review declined

A supplement label the client checked themselves

We handled their FDA registration and recommended a label review. They declined. The Supplement Facts format was wrong and the declared amounts did not match the product.

Refused at the US port and destroyed.

Prop 65 · caught early

A listed chemical in the formula

Our Prop 65 review found an ingredient on California's list of chemicals known to cause cancer.

The client reformulated and redesigned the label before launch.

FDA + FTC + Prop 65 · rush

Claims that could not be backed up

A cosmetics brand from India promised "100% satisfaction" and quoted a result from its own small in-house test. The FTC review flagged both.

Revised before sales started. Three rounds completed in 48 hours.

FAQ

US Label Review Questions

Common questions about reviewing a label for the US market, answered.

Does FDA approve labels before I ship?

No. FDA does not pre-approve food, supplement, cosmetic or pet food labels. The brand is responsible for getting the label right, and problems usually surface at the port, during an FDA inspection, or after a complaint. That is why a review before printing matters.

Which regulations does the review cover?

Three, and you choose which ones you need: FDA mandatory labeling (what must appear on the label and how), FTC rules on advertising and marketing claims (including "Made in USA"), and California Proposition 65 warnings.

What do I receive?

A label report for each SKU that lists every issue we find, the rule behind it, and what needs to change. Your designer updates the artwork, sends it back, and we check it again until it is complete.

How long does it take?

Standard review is 5 to 7 business days per round, and most labels need about 3 rounds. Rush review is 1 to 2 business days per round, for a 15% rush fee. We have completed three full rounds in 48 hours for a brand on a tight launch date.

How is it priced?

Per SKU, per regulation. For food and pet food: $350 for FDA only, $500 for FDA plus FTC or Prop 65, and $660 for all three. For cosmetics and supplements: $600, $630 and $660. A variant of the same SKU, such as a different color or fragrance, gets 30% off, and re-checks are free until your label is complete.

Do you do nutrient or lab analysis?

No. We review the values and statements on your label against the rules. Nutrient values must come from your own lab results or your formulator.

Do I need Proposition 65 if I do not sell in California?

Prop 65 applies to products sold to consumers in California, including online orders shipped there. If your distributor or marketplace can sell into California, assume it applies and check before you print.
